(b)* I was travelling Northwards**, almost as a refugee; the land behind me to the South was flooding, and water was rising in all the narrow valleys. Once in the hills, however – which reached out in spurs from the northern highland between the flooding valleys – I was able to turn round on what I took to be the narrow highland and watch the flooding [of the] South from safety. Turning North again, I saw that a whole new high country opened up: a Country of light, refuge, and new beginnings.***[sic]
