One point which [W] made had not occurred to me: but I amplify it here.
A Priestly vocation is not, by any account, just another job. Anyone who puts himself forward sincerely (I suppose there may be frauds) is likely to feel that he has such a vocation, one way or another, and to have put a great deal of emotional commitment and spiritual energy into his application. A Church which preaches the Christian doctrine of Love – and which employs Human resources to put that quality into practice – when rejecting what may well be among the most profound self-defining beliefs of any of its own most loyal members, should at least send someone round to talk him or her down – not just send a rejection letter.*
