On the other hand,* the phrase in the rejection letter** ‘after much discussion’ suggests that the uncertainty may have been in them, eg that they simply couldn’t make up their minds or agree, and that this is a compromise, perhaps a Chairman’s compromise, maybe even between different factions. (But this is speculation.) In which case they should have sent me on for intensive interrogation in July.***
