The ‘opposite’ of the Unconscious,* of course, is not the Conscious, but the Self-Conscious: the mind capable of considering itself and its own states of mind and actions with a measure of detachment. So far as we know, only Man is self-conscious.

It is apparent that evolution from Unconscious to Self-conscious is a stage of development to (and through)** self-abnegation: to cast away the Self, you have first to identify it.
