{The Horned Priest}[12th April 1987]

[continued]

I was interested to see that in Tibetan Buddhist dances the Deer is a key figure in bringing about the triumph of Good over Evil. I was interested because ever since the Tarot Cards assumed their present layout*, I have felt that the card 'The Devil' was probably misnamed for reasons of religious censorship: given its position (Inner +K) it seemed more likely to depict release by initiation ** by a horned “god” or priest, of the Celtic(?)*** type. On the other hand, it does mark re-entry of**** the lower semi-circle (centred on Inner +Mk).#

*[i.e. on the Circles model, presumably. <20160220>]

**I suspect, release (probably not by initiation, or not necessarily) from the chains binding one to the Underworld and to the horned daemon of some pre-Christian system who has been transferred to Christianity as the power of the Underworld, so that one may pass through that Underworld unharmed: the demon [sic] may be the one who cuts the bonds, but he has no choice. <891001>  Why not release from the Outer Circle? <930418>

***[or/i.e. shamanic? <20160220>]

****{to?}
