And, really, all that the Circles are about is a way of helping to do this* – I believe. If they seem to work in the outside World at times, this is because the Spirit itself permeates the outside World: religious experience of an inner kind frequently produces echoes in observations and events of an outer kind.

I know I try to force the fit to the outside World, sometimes, but this is because it fascinates me so much: the important thing (until I can give up the habit) is to be ready to abandon things that feel wrong. Once again comes the warning against superstitious error: too great a concentration on externals, even on externals symbolising internals, brings dangers of externalising the whole experience and losing the inward search for God.**
