NUMBERING, AGES AND OCCUPATIONS [continued(4)])[9th

[continued]
There
have been attempts (Plato, Pythagoras?) to divide populations into
three or four basic categories*; I cannot remember how exactly these
worked but they may be suitable** to the Suit symbols or to all eight
Archetype points – which may have implications for Outer and Inner
Circle developments. So, possibly:

--More
likely now to be exam-passers, i.e. on Analytic side. <880806>
#*[Statistical
survey results are underlined in columns (not column headings).]
This
is obviously highly speculative as to occupations, but I have tried
tentatively to fit them into the general pattern of qualities etc. as
well as the results of statistical surveys. The reason for the
swapover [indicated
by text struck through]#**
between Mk and M type occupations is that once this was done, two
polarities seemed to appear: in a general sense, in Circle terms,
between top (i.e. +C semicircle) which is cerebral, and bottom (i.e.
Mk+ semicircle) which is 'manual' or manufactory; and between (say)
left (+K semicircle) which is creative or inspirational#***; and
(say) right (+M semicircle) which is analytical or judgemental#****
(Doing this also seems to reduce the slight feeling of
dissatisfaction one gets at the end when something seems to be not
quite right).
In
a very
broad
sense, these occupations also fit the image-age, i.e. the mental
image one might have of the age (or mental age) of the typical
practitioner, as one might wish to see him (Yuppies are irrelevant –
we don't wish to see them). This is why I have made the distinction
between the two## kinds of Army Officer (I don't know where Navy and
Air Force fit in, “[2]” notwithstanding##*. There are many other
occupations omitted, of course.).
*?e.g.
Poets/Philosophers
Warriors
Merchants
Farmers***

#**[
As shown by the words struck through (which in the ms. are linked by
a double-ended arrow question-marked, ticked and then all struck
through); the final decision here did not remain final, at least in
this exact form.]
#***vocational?
#****These
are in fact long-standing polarities between the four Cardinal
Archetypes; but the Mk/M split [i.e. the subject of the swapover
referred to] is slightly different, I think.
These
polarities are centred approximately where the [Tarot] Suits are
located, i.e. on the Cardinal points, as follows:
(Relationship
of TII-TV and Numbered Suits still unclear)
+C
– Spades – Cerebral
+Mk
– Clubs – Manu(factor)al
+M
– Diamonds – Archetypal
+K
– Hearts - Vocational
##[Army
Officers appear twice in the statistical results, without
distinction; the distinction here is speculative.]

draft; episode subsequently removed but possibly to be used in a
later fiction.]
