The more I experience it, the more it appears that there is a great truth in the old adage: 'Money is the root of all evil': in the sense that money, what money can buy, and the knowledge of what money can buy* have a corrupting and oppressive effect on the Human Soul, or more generally on the psyche. I experience this intensely myself: not just in relation to our problems with our business and our flat (which corrupted me as well as others) but even now – for example over the tangle of legal rights etc. over land, that seem to come with [CH].

If taken literally, these can produce an extreme feeling of potential and psychological oppression; but what is the Law if not, at least in principle, taken literally? The Law is a blunt instrument; for the first time I see how the Land (other perhaps than the land your house is built on and the immediate garden) should be held and used in common, in the community governed by an Inner Harmony which does not now exist. My feeling of oppression is based on fear, but fear which is founded on painful experience.
