This Circles business began, if I remember rightly, from various strains: particularly I think from an acute awareness of the cyclical appearance of World and National history, as Britain slid at an accelerating rate down the league table of nations; but consideration of the polarisation of forces apparent at all levels (including the personal) (which manifested itself in the four Archetypal figures), and even meditation upon the Union Jack,* have contributed.

Books (for example, simple descriptions of Sufi thought), although they may have influenced later developments, have generally been picked up because of particular developments which have already occurred to me. Serendipitous browsing is a curious process, giving rise often (and perhaps too readily) to a strong sense of the providential.
