I believe* that the earliest manifestation of the Circles pattern (to me) were the cardinal qualities** on Inner and Outer Circles***; the diagonal-point qualities must have followed soon after. I don't know that these have changed much, although Evolution**** was always a puzzle and only came to seem inspired during the writing of [2].

Colours came fairly early (when I was studying litho at the London College of Printing in about 1981, I think) but have been changed and are still not completely certain.
