It would obviously be easy for anyone reading this* to assume that these manifestations* are simply pieces of imaginative fiction, of the same order as (say) one of [Charles] Dickens’ characters.** To come to terms with the fact that, as a matter of experience, this is not so – that just as, in my fiction, the archetypal characters have a deeper and purer and more independent reality than the ordinary characters: so these manifestations in turn have a deeper, purer and more independent reality than the fictional Archetypes for which they are the basis – to come to terms with that is a challenge which I issue to any reader.
