is their* function? They are Spirits of Love, of course; and they and
particularly the one kneeling nearest are here to help me, I believe;
although how exactly, I cannot say.** Certainly they are not here to
‘do my bidding’: the idea makes me recoil in horror. But
wherever the need is, they are there.
