*And
Church? Well, I am still oscillating; but then, I have never been
one for team sports. I had to read a Lesson ** before the Archbishop
from St. David's in [our church] earlier this year: I had taken care to
send the xS extracts from [2] to our Canon, [XQ] – whose excellence
is the main factor keeping me in the Church – about a week (or
less) beforehand. On that Sunday morning, washing my hair [while] in
the bath, I became partially deaf, and remained so until after the
Service: something I do not recall happening elsewhen.**** Leaving
for Church, I found that in the night the wind had apparently
unhitched the restraining string of the open gate from its nail, and
blown it shut, so that I had to get out of the car an open it:
something which in all the gales before and since has never
happened.# (Or did we leave it unhitched?)
On
the whole, I avoid superstitious attention to apparent actual signs
(as opposed to symbols) because they are almost invariably
ambiguous.#* But one does wonder, sometimes.

#**After
the Service, the Canon pointed me out to the Archbishop, who had in
fact already worked out who I was; the Archbishop enquired of me what
I did, offered me computer work – which I said I would only do for
free, against his protestation that it was to help me – and told me
to get in touch with them if they could help; my late admission to
the secret vice of scribbling went unheard, I think. See
