{A Dream of the Church: The Incomplete Staircase}[27th May 1988]

Some dreams still seem worth noting for the light they throw on my own state of mind; and this fragment relates particularly to current discussion.*

From a few nights ago: (After some travel with [W] and (I think) the children,) we arrived at the Church – a rather fantastical building; but ascending the straight and narrowing (external) stairs, I noticed that although they ended at a broad landing, with a wide door off the side, there was smaller door straight ahead but much further up: then I noticed that the line of the staircase was clearly visible on the side walls continuing straight (i.e. projecting the line of the extant staircase) up to the bottom of that door: just as one sees sometimes on partially demolished buildings the line of removed staircases on inner walls. We went from the broad landing through the wide side door into the Church, which was modern in style and deco – like an airport terminal, or a newly opened supermarket. There, I think, the Canon** greeted us; *** and I felt incorrectly dressed, which is (I believe) supposed to be an old dream-symbol of being in the wrong place or situation.
