In so far as the phenomenal aspect of Christ, of Jesus Christ, consists of external signs, internalised or not, these phenomena can also* be misused: to open your mind so that anything may be put in. I am thinking of healing miracles, white or bright light, even ritual: even sayings. Some of these things have their use as symbols, some as … substance:** but the substance needs to be carefully handled.

Even the traditional appearance (or appearances), even the name of Christ can be misused. And yet Christ himself is the essential model and being by whom, and only by whom, we can be led to God.*** How do we distinguish him, then? By his Quality: I say again, by his Quality.

**[Possibly an oblique reference to the Christian doctrine of transubstantiation: 'Transubstantiation (Latin: transsubstantiatio; Greek: μετουσίωσις metousiosis) is, according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, the change of substance or essence by which the bread and wine offered in the sacrifice of the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Mass, become, in reality, the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
