When, at [my secondary school], I was asked to be Head of House – being the only person available and even remotely suitable – I had to build my confidence by simple, but powerful, psychological methods: I simply kept telling myself, in every free moment, for months in advance, that I could do it. This worked, but was not without cost: first, I became arrogant and, in the end, believed myself above the law; second, when my role ceased at the end of term, my self-confidence collapsed with it.*

I suggest that in Circle Terms [sic] the New Age cults work something like that: the cultist is trained, in effect, to arouse that aspect of the Whole [sic] which corresponds to his and the cult's real desires. Even Unity is easily confused with Ordination, or Attraction, or Simplification: I suspect that it is a Quality which can only be offered, not achieved.
