The
co-incidences* are, as they say, uncanny, or at least remarkable.
The question is, how do they arise? I can think of at least three
possibilities:
(1)
Accident
(2)
Common cultural influences
(3)
Common description of reality.
I
think that the first is least likely, and the second most likely:
given that mathematics seems to be rooted within
the mind of Man (as well as possibly elsewhere), the same
pre-occupations and patterns might be expected to turn up again and
again. I am sure that it is no accident when the theorists choose
names like ‘up’, ‘down’, ‘charm’, ‘strange’,
‘top’/’truth’ and ‘bottom’/’beauty’ for the
previously unknown qualities of the Quarks: these labels reflect the,
probably** unconscious, pre-occupations of the theorists.
But
given that Mathematics does seem to link the inner mind of Man with
the outer or actual World, the difference between (2) and (3) may be
more apparent than real.***

***And
how curious that my first placing of Tarot II (the current system)

to a rough working diagram inserted in the manuscript volume and
subsequently inserted in the typescript (because referred to here,

when superstrings first appeared; but the first circle (square cross)
appears in 197509 (II.[referring
to a speculative rough note and diagram inserted in the manuscript
volume but not (yet) included in the typescript or posted,]72),
the diagonal cross by 197603 (II.[not
