{The Brain}[5th October 1987]

*What about brain damage? – One of the stages [sic] of which may be aggressive verbal and physical behaviour. For all I know, that may involve hatred; but as the cause is physical, control** seems unlikely to be possible. I hazard a guess that the key is still that Spiritual recognition, that ability to know God by the Spirit, which we may call Con-science. If he has it, the victim will in time be able, in theory, to bring his Outer Circle emotions under control, which is a part of the healing process: and if the brain can heal itself, how can we tell cause from effect?

But what if he does not have it? – No Conscience? Is he at a sub-human level? In either case, we would be unwise to assume that the potential for awakened Conscience is not there; and we should care for the victim as though it was, just as we care for a baby in whom it is. Babies and toddlers, too, have moments of apparently uncontrollable aggression.

**[i.e. mental self-control, presumably, rather than physical control by medication, physical restraint etc.,]
