what about **senile dementia? – The once bright individual whose
brain seizes up with (for example) **Alzheimer's disease? Have the
Spirit and the Soul fled, leaving just an animal (or, as we unkindly
say, a vegetable?) Or are they dormant, awaiting death for release?
Or have they simply retreated into an inner World beyond our reach,
where they are active and lively still within? Once again, it would
be unwise to assume that the potential for awakened Conscience has
utterly disappeared.

[Advanced
dementia/Alzheimer's, given the rest of the paragraph. The writer of
this footnote is, while typing this, sitting with an elderly and very
close relation (currently sleeping) who has serious and apparently
progressive loss of short-term memory, one of the constituents of
what is described as dementia; and the writer of this footnote was
for about two years until last year closely involved with the decline
from Alzheimer's, and eventual death, of the parent of a very close
personal friend. Alzheimer's, and dementia in general, are not
binary, on/off conditions as suggested here (and as often understood
by those who have little or no experience of them.]
