There
must, I think, be an illogicality in the justification of (say)
Christian ethics without Christianity: it has a hollow centre (the
Circles don't: they are really Discs*). Even Humanism, I believe,
owes its character to Christian civilisation. Attempts to explain
ethics in terms of biology or socio-biology do not do anything at all
to justify us in continuing
to observe them. First Principles beg a First Cause.
