It
is satisfying to find parallels between the Circles and other
relevant works. It is too easy, perhaps, given the multiplicity of
events in such works and the different options on the Circles. Only
the strongest pattern should pass consideration as a conscious or
unconscious choice by the writer.
It
could be argued that the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings starts tentatively
with Air (Eagles and Smaug), proceeds through much Earth travel to
destroy the ring in Fire, and ends with Bilbo and Frodo passing over
the Water to a new Circle. But I think that is stretching it a bit.*
