John Torode (Who he?),* writing in the Independent yesterday,** seems to detail a return towards national consensus between Left and Right over such matters as working with the market, training and education, and public investment in infrastructure.

The examples he gives are very recent – within the last year or so. All the same, the first case represents a recent Labour [Party] acceptance of a shift to the Right which had been happening for about a decade under Mrs. Thatcher,*** linked with control of the Unions, closure of uneconomic industries, etc.. The last two cases are genuine recent trends representing a shift among Conservatives away from the Right and towards the Left.
