{A Writing Career? [continued (3)]}[26th October 1988]

[continued]

I was horribly reminded* of my father’s cruel and unjustified comment that (he was quoting) Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach (– For which substitute write, publish, etc.). Only an ignorant man could even think such a thing. But I offer a speculative development by which teaching, writing and publishing come to seem soft options for** weak men of the right semi-circle,*** who by their tendencies towards formalism**** and hierarchies and analysis contrive to prevent the Inner developments of Art in writing from ever rising into the World of Action onto whose fringes they cling. [–] Because Art is a matter of bringing Sensitivity and Fire through Stubbornness and Intellect to the Light; and when that is translated into wider-world terms, it could do with help from those charged with implementation.

*[See last previous entry]

**[ie (possibly): 'as seen by'? or ‘for’ as stated]

***{(Probably thinking themselves vaguely left-wing, but not living it)}

****in the non-metaphysical sense.
