The background of this* is that our local secondary school at […] has an English stream and a Welsh stream, which seems to keep everybody happy; each learns the other as a second language. Faced with an increase in the number of English-speaking children, and a decline in the Welsh-speaking proportion of the population, the response of the local Education Authority has been to hold local meetings to discuss the conversion of [the school] to a bi-lingual school, which apparently means that half** the subjects are taught in English and half in Welsh. Our local meeting, about which we did not discover until after it had been held, was conducted – despite the presence of non-Welsh-speaking parents – entirely in Welsh.

It is difficult, in the face of this sort of tactical warfare and the continual blaming*** of Welsh Wales’ problems on ‘English’ incomers, to retain one’s own desire to learn and support the language; but I hope that I can.****
