truth, and straightness, are important: one of the terrifying
developments in Metropolitan English culture at present is the loss
of truthfulness.*

again, too rigorous an insistence on straight-forward approaches to
truth (and one’s own possession of Truth, the unpossessable) makes
Art impossible; there is a hint of this in a discussion of Scots
