The Circle relations offer an explanation of how it is that both Unionists and Separatists see themselves as aspiring towards Unity – at different levels. For if Unionism is an integrating (or Inner Circle) process, rotating towards Unity at higher and higher levels, so Separatism is a disintegrating (or Outer Circle) process, also rotating towards Unity[,] at lower and lower levels – but in the nature of things, and of the Circles, Separatism tends to be drawn more towards an Attraction-to-Unity than to any real Unity, as may be seen in Ireland and in many former British colonies.

It is, of course, possible to reverse the Circle, but only by the exercise of virtues rarely found in politics.
