In Christian terms, this* is the recognition of the burden of sin, guilt and suffering which has to occur before it can be taken by Christ, and the Christian forgiven and released from his past weight or stain.

In terms of mental illness, it is the stage of acute schizophrenia** when 'voices' frequently assail the sufferer from inside his head, 'telling me what a bastard I am'.***

In Circles Analysis (those Circles again!), it is the G~-R~-+C†I~ quadrant: Gabriel being the Angel of Recall (Circles Analysis and [2]), the Angel of Truth (Islam), and in some traditions, I believe, the Recording Angel.****
