To complicate matters even more*, there are strong indications that the 'proper' location of [...]land is (at least at times) centred on the North (or South??) Pole.** This would change matters considerably and make the East-West orientation at any moment much more important, given that the Earth revolves anti-clockwise as seen from above the North Pole,
