[Redbook4:34][19870710:0855g]{The
Revelation of St. John}[10th
July 1987]

[continued]
On
the whole I am fairly suspicious of the Revelation to St. John*,
gripping though it is: not least because many believe it to be a
literal prophecy of times near at hand, and some positively welcome
it, including (according to an unsettling rumour) some of those who
have the power to initiate a Nuclear War. But it is interesting that
the 7 trumpet disasters (and to a lesser extent the 7 bowl-plagues,
which seem to fit them) move from the natural to the political and
fit, to an extent, the pattern of the Circle – but in an Inner
Circle direction, which is surprising. On the whole (despite the
present size of the European Community!) I think that nothing much of
detail can be gained from the Revelation of St. John specifically,
because it is so muddled. It is a different matter where images are
borrowed and developed from earlier authorities and sources, (e.g.
the 4 Creatures and the 4 Horsemen); and in a general
sense, the vision is extremely powerful.
Obviously,
I do not know for certain that parts of it do not relate to our own
times – but I cannot match it with sufficient certainty to be
confident that they do.
