{Clogs to Clogs}[12th July 1987]

[Redbook4:38-39][19870712:1000f]{Clogs to Clogs}[12th July 1987]

[continued]

I cannot remember whether I have noted before the niceness of the expression “Clogs to clogs in three generations” – except that in the examples I have seen, it is five generations** including both pairs of clogs. And yes, of course it fits the Outer Circle:

Poverty

(5th* Generation 1st*)

Sloth
ATTRACTION
→↓
Pride

Simplification

Ordination
→↓

(4th*)
REVOLUTION

ACTION
(2nd*)
Envy
↑←
Fragmentation

Complication
Avarice

Gluttony
↑←
DISTRACTION
Lechery

(3rd*)

Anger

*: [The notes below are with the Ordinal numbers in the ms. In the ms, the Principles are connected by curving clockwise arrows.]
(1st): Poverty.
(2nd): Makes Money. (Learns to live on the money.)
(3rd): (Forgets how to make money.) Lives on the Money. (Learns how to waste money.)
(4th): Wastes Money. (Forgets how to live on the money.)
(5th): Poverty.

Note how nicely the mediaeval hierarchy of Vices (from p13) fits this.*** I suppose Pride and Anger might be swapped: they are not always easily distinguishable. This Pride is that of the self-made man**** (or self-making man) who believes, with self-fulfilling prophecy, that in his own terms he can do anything. Avarice is the spur to build his wealth.

The first complication of such men is frequently lechery; the next generation are frequently born into it.# They live on the accumulated capital, increasing nothing of material wealth, distracted by their wealth into the generally superficial activities which will fritter it away: this is how the fragmentation of the family estate begins. They are in literature as in life frequently choleric in temperament because they have not had to learn the need for patience. They share Gluttony with their children: not just for food, but in appetite for many pleasures.

But it is their children who first begin to feel the pinch, which is how Envy arises: of their parents, who lived on the capital and dissipated it; of their contemporaries who all seem to be doing so much better materially; and of their children (as I know to my cost), who seem to have all the benefits of a new start. But the one thing they do generally have in common with their children is that terrible Sloth which does {(often)} seem to be bred in the bone, although in fact it can be overthrown.

And the children are back where their great-great-grandparents began, able to start a new dynasty on the Outer Circle – or a new life on the Inner? It is perhaps easier for them than for others.

As with all such analyses, the boundaries are unlikely to be as clear in life as in concept. And the pattern is not inevitable as it is described.

*[See note above, immediately below diagram.]

**(or, historically, as many as 9?)

***(Note how neatly the Vices also describe the 7 stages of business employment (to which the Principles were applied in Book [=Vol] II &/or III.) {Were they?}

{Outer Circles (2)*}[12th July 1987]

[Redbook4:37][19870712:1000e]{Outer Circles (2)*}[12th July 1987]

The more one considers it, the more likely it seems that the Outer Circle does indeed include a succession of circles (or a spiral) further out but turning in the same way. These are not to be confused with Tarots 0 to V; they are echoes of the main Outer Circle position. I say 'include' because if you look at it another way, there is only one Outer Circle but it may have breadth around its path. I have identified this breadth as having two sides: 'Inward' – on which the Individual is self-aware and stands the best chance of returning at the end – and 'Outward' – on which he stands the worst chance of returning. What is suggested here is that 'Outward' Outer Circle may include, or be the culmination of, a succession of 'Outermost' Circles (e.g. Number Suits 1 – 10 as suggested in Book [sic] III)**

Re-consideration of this was prompted by [Dorothy] Sayers'*** attribution of Innocence to the Earthly Paradise at the summit of Mount Purgatory – a point which corresponds with the 'end'**** of the Outer Circle. As Hell and Purgatory have much organisation in common#, I cannot help seeing them resonate in terms of Outward and Inward Outer Circle, at least in parts. There are, of course, major differences.

While I was setting out the Roman Calendar (p35)*, another and interesting point occurred to me: I foolishly put off noting it down until I had finished the [then] current task, after which I found I had altogether forgotten it. I still have.

I still feel the pressure to return; but whereas in Scotland it was a pressure to return permanently Southwards, here it is a pressure to become involved with the Midlands and South of England to the East and South-east of me, by travelling there and back, from and to this base.* I do not know yet what from this involvement will take, but I expect it at least initially to be an increasing one.

But* perhaps I am coming towards the time when I should stop searching for these ancient confirmations* (but let them still come!) and concentrate more on contemporary patterns, and particularly on the sixteen Principles. In The Times this week Henry Stanhope (I think it was)** remarked casually on the apparently disproportionate number of Aries among leading M.Ps. Aries falls between Revelation/Revolution and Creation/Fragmentation; xP (J~?), on the second, is in many ways the archetypal political activist.

*[See last previous entry.]

**Yes, it was. [A cutting stapled at p33 on <911201> from The Times of 10/07/1987 headed “however... Henry Stanhope: It's a funny old firmament” (referenced in this volume as 33A] has marked the words “...a surprisingly high proportion of our leading MPs are Aries....”.] {33A}

The Circles fitted to the Sistine Chapel ceiling place the Delphic Oracle at Fragmentation/Creation; and on Mount Parnassus above Delphi, where there was a sacred cave and spring, there bathed Apollo and the Muses*. If my classical education had been taken (by me) more thoroughly, I wouldn't have needed Dorothy Sayers' footnote** to tell me this.

[January:] Janus – The god who looks two ways. A way in or out, doorway, arch (Janua: key to a territory (military). Arab sacrifice.
[February:] Roman festival of purification & expiation (& surname of Juno).
[March:] Mars – god of agriculture, pasture & war (cf. Ares/Aries) [Early] Roman New Year [1st March]
[April:] ?Aperio = to [sic] uncover, disclose to view, open up, make accessible.
[May:] Maia: (goddess of growth & increase). f.d. of Atlas & Pleiona (– f., m. of Pleiades) & m. of Mercury by Jupiter.
[June:] Juno, d. of Saturn, s. & w. of Jupiter {Queen of Heaven}
[July:] Julius Caesar, Emperor.
[August:] Emperor. (Sacred, grand)
[September:] (7th)
[October:] (8th)
[November:] (9th)
[December:] (10th)
[The notes above are written alongside their months in the ms diagram. Arrows on the ms diagram cannot be represented here.]

Note that although the [early] Roman year began in March (when Winter ended?), January's name is entirely consistent with an astronomical or Solar New Year (i.e. when the days get longer). Only Mars seems to be completely out of time with my own archetypal derivations: I adopted (not chose – that was earlier) “+Mk” at A~ partly because of Mars. However, +G's Outer position is known for internal war (+M's for external war), so it may be that I am “wrong” in this. Perhaps the correct way of looking at it is to say that the Romans could have attributed Mars to either equinox, or the Summer Solstice?**

The happiest correlations are:
January and February – the gateway and the purification sacrifice
May and June – the two goddesses/queens at Tarot III Empress
July and August – the two emperors at Tarot IV Emperor, and Leo

*{cf.II.76 (re File Note)} [Unclear to what this note refers.]

**i.e. as a motive power of material considerations at both equinoxes.
[Presumably the Romans placed Mars around the Spring Equinox because Spring marked the start of the military campaigning season...? <20160617>]

{The Revelation of St. John}[10th July 1987]

[Redbook4:34][19870710:0855g]{The Revelation of St. John}[10th July 1987]

19870710.0855
[continued]

On the whole I am fairly suspicious of the Revelation to St. John*, gripping though it is: not least because many believe it to be a literal prophecy of times near at hand, and some positively welcome it, including (according to an unsettling rumour) some of those who have the power to initiate a Nuclear War. But it is interesting that the 7 trumpet disasters (and to a lesser extent the 7 bowl-plagues, which seem to fit them) move from the natural to the political and fit, to an extent, the pattern of the Circle – but in an Inner Circle direction, which is surprising. On the whole (despite the present size of the European Community!) I think that nothing much of detail can be gained from the Revelation of St. John specifically, because it is so muddled. It is a different matter where images are borrowed and developed from earlier authorities and sources, (e.g. the 4 Creatures and the 4 Horsemen); and in a general sense, the vision is extremely powerful.

Obviously, I do not know for certain that parts of it do not relate to our own times – but I cannot match it with sufficient certainty to be confident that they do.
