But* even a small nudge (in itself quite inconsequential) can bring home (or up) the basic sterility of material concerns such as houses and shops, even if these are being considered as the secular basis for a life of discovery and disclosure in religion independent of the institutional Church, which they tend (in my weak mind) to take over – by contrast with the essential spiritual richness of that Inner Life, of the Church, which (not organisation or buildings) is the Real Church, beyond all distractions of Parish life and ecclesiastical bureaucracy, underpinning (one hopes) both.
