I wonder whether their being ‘in hiding’ from her parents until after the television appearance may not be because – especially once the psychiatric treatment for anorexia had been brought up – they were afraid that she would be sectioned under the Mental Health Acts* and have her pregnancy compulsorily terminated.** If so – and such a possibility, though remote, is not fantastic – the strain on a girl only a few weeks’ pregnant must have been awful, and their decision to go to the Press in the first place makes excellent sense.

*(?)

**[There is no suggestion intended here that her parents or anyone else would have done this; only a speculation that the couple might have been afraid that it could happen.]
