{Methodology: Matters Arising}[14th October 1987]

These ideas* (for what they are worth) rise like bubbles of air from the depths of a duck pond: and, like bubbles, they float on the surface for a while. I do not generally have to think my way through them: if 'tapped' (by putting pen to paper) they simply start to flow, as if the bubble became a funnel or tunnel bringing more air up from the depths; until they have finished, when they stop. Attempts to force them to continue lead to a feeling of staleness. But if they are not tapped they will eventually, like bubbles again, simply disappear:** this will generally occur within the day.

This thought (which isn't really one of them) occurs following loss of an idea after continual postponement during a day of distractions – not least of which were a small boy staying overnight with us, his first night from home; and a recent letter – their first response – from my parents' Solicitor.***
