{Learning [continued (4)]}[8th October 1987]

However,* applying the Gifts [of the Spirit]** to the above analysis*** produces not entirely easy results. I have regarded the left**** of the Circles, where Revelation is found, as the teaching (and thus learning in a formal verbal sense) side. The Gifts are Wisdom, (R~, and Intuition), Understanding (G~, and Revelation), and Counsel (J~, and Innovation), opposite to S~ and Intellection).#

#*Knowledge, which one can accept is not a part of the other group#**, is at U~, not S~. So why have I put academic scholarship at S~?

(1) Because intellection [sic] belongs there, being Cerebral#*** and Analytical#****, and because Doctors, Lawyers and some Army Officers statistically## belong there.

(2) Because the Virtue of Prudence (not to mention the Vice of Pride),##* and the character of xA so far as I know it, seem to go particularly with the traditional practice of Scholarship. Scholarship is neither Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel nor Knowledge: it is not a Gift but a method. It may not seem to have much to do with Fear of the Lord##** nowadays but it certainly requires a respect for the subject-matter,##*** which is as close as most Academics are likely to come to Fear of the Lord today.##****

****[By this time the horizontal orientation (which depends on viewpoint) seems to have settled down, as compared with (e.g.) [Redbook3:217-222][19870502:1025b](EVOLUTION OF PATTERNS OF SYMBOLS)([&] DIAGONAL PERSONALITIES [continued]) [2nd May 1987], diagram.]

##****This seems to suggest that Scholarship & Teaching should not necessarily go together; many think otherwise (cf. New Scientist 15/10/[19]87[,] p.66 (Col 1). <871016>
