– this
possibly helps to explain why scientists of genius (I refer to their
method of cerebration, not to their achievements – cf. The Sistine
Chapel's Genii) should not, on the whole, attempt to put their ideas
into commercial production themselves, but should hand over the task
to men able to do it – those with management, business and
technical
skills.*** The crucial question is: when?
The
answer which emerges is, I think, between Research (when the genius
confirms and refines his idea by experiment) and Development (when
the technician moulds it to the requirements of the ensuing stages,
i.e., basically, the market-place). For recognition, I think that
in the first instance the Idea is still the dominant influence on the
work, even if the eventual function or market is in mind; in the
second instance the market function dominates the work on the result
of the original idea. There is, however, a semi-conscious link from
the market back to the origination of ideas; if this becomes too
conscious and forced or willed a process of cerebration, the Circle
is reversed and becomes Outer Circle.
