A note on Cherubim*: from the Encylopaedia Biblica, under “Cherub”, I have been referred to Ezekiel 28:11-19*** re the fall of the King of Tyre: who seems to have been raised to a living perfection, with (&/or as one of) the Cherubim, but to have succumbed to the Sin of Pride and therefore to have been thrown down and destroyed.**

All I know about Seraphim is that they are or may be manifested as serpents (of fire or light?), suggesting the fundamental Circle pattern; and there is something in Dante (or a Note?) about their being associated with Love (as, of course, are Cherubs), which is next round the Circle again.* Seraphim would, presumably, be the first (i.e. last) before God, barely distinguishable to us.**

*at Archangels; cf. xP in [2] talking about what moves (or connects) the Angels of the Net: Love.

**(Note, however, the possible derivation from (Hebrew word) 'Fire', & the original word used for them as serpents: δρακοντες [drakontes], dragons) {in [the Book of] Enoch}.

Although I am not too keen on the classical or Victorian Cherub{im}, it may (in conjunction with Tarot XX, which seems to show another birth or re-birth) indicate the state of the Individual Soul (of Man or Angel) naked before God, child-like, flying without wings (“Ariel”?)....*

Principalities* mark the turning point beyond which I cannot at present see very much. From hints and guesses, I venture that Dominions and Thrones (by their names) also come when they will, rather than when the Individual wills, but I guess lead rather than drive Men.

Virtues and *Powers may (and can only**) manifest themselves*** to Men in an internal form (which Man's creative symbolism may, however, consciously or unconsciously symbolise as a living anthropomorphic form****) (Don't forget that we are not necessarily talking about different Individual Angels: they may be the same Individual Angels at different levels or planes within the Spiritual Kingdom). These are in fact Angels manifesting themselves within the minds of Men as the Qualities which are their Souls and their real Forms# within this Spiritual Realm. Virtues (e.g. Charity, Justice) are accessible to all, by a form of psychological invocation, formal or informal;#** Powers#*** are not, and their manifestation depends (I would guess) on the Inner Circle development of the Individual Man.

Neither of them will, I guess, come (or at least remain) without being invoked or invited#****; this distinguishes them from Principalities, which do come (and go) uninvited and often unwanted##; they are the Inner##* (Circle) Principles such as Creation and Love.[BUT SEE FINAL FOOTNOTE BELOW]##**

These* are all Angels: this is the Angelic Hierarchy, and the Circle pattern shows it to be quite wrong to see Angels as the lowest rank (and Archangels as next lowest – this is what has bothered me in the past). What I think the hierarchy describes is levels of manifestation or immanence one way, refinement or transcendence the other way.**

All the Angelic Agents operating in [2]*** are operating as Angels, without exception, i.e. in a form which can be perceived**** by Individual Men. There is a slight confusion over Archangels there,

which I think may be resolved as follows: the 8 Archetypes (i.e. xS etc.) are also operating as Angels but have their co-ordinating role as Arch-angels (Chief Messengers#), in which form they occasionally appear to (selected) Individuals.

I guess that Angels and Archangels are the only levels at which an Angelic Spirit may appear, i.e. in an external form, to Men; the difference being that an Angelic form may be mistaken for another Man (hence the (necessary?) association with Vices)#* whereas the Archangelic form can never be mistaken for another Man (and is associated with Archetypal symbols, e.g. Horsemen and Living Creatures).#**

**Principalities are the “lowest” – but not in an hierarchical sense: they are most separated (?); they are of the Underworld (our Underworld) (cf. The Prince of Darkness.)

So what is this one* all about?

First, a couple of comments:

(1) The pairs into which these fall not only (for the most part) arise naturally from the meanings of the words; but also reflect the tendencies of the Archetypes in [2] (as opposed to their formal Masteries).

If I recall correctly, the Masteries are as follows:

I think this is a sort of affinity reflecting the composition of the Circles themselves (e.g. the position of Attraction/Unity).

(2) #I don't think one should expect to see each Archetype in the 'rank' assigned to him: but it may be the rank in which he most easily rests, i.e. which is characteristic of him, and possibly the rank which he leads (i.e. is Master of): possibly, therefore, the rank which is characteristic of his followers among Angels (and Men?).#*
