{A Dream: of Floods and Highlands}[19th January 1984]

[continued]

A much clearer one*, more self-contained, involved a country or geographical section shaped like a rectangle, when perceived as a whole, but also seen from within as full-scale. It was not intended to be isolated, as rivers and hill ranges clearly were continuations of, and continued into, the same elsewhere; but the rectangular outline was exact. The valleys were so laid out, mostly curving along a general 'north-south' line**, that great floods were expected; in the knowledge of this some people climbed to the high ground in the 'North' (my label), although possibly some abandoned it again***.

When the floods did come they were dramatic and real: they came in the first instance along these curving valleys (the South end of whose curves may in some or all cases have led from the south ends of the long sides [of the rectangle] instead of the south short side), rising to cover also the hill ranges and ridges in between.

Finally some of us who survived by being on the Northern highlands found that 'beyond' us, i.e. beyond the northern side of the rectangle, there was in fact an unexpected area, as high or higher, with buildings which (although at first one might not have been sure) were also out of reach of the floods. I have an idea that there were mountains around also.

*[i.e dream – ref. last previous entry.]

**(my term – i.e. parallel with the long axis.)

***(For some extraordinary reason Mrs. Thatcher seems to have been briefly visible in the main part of the Country at this stage – on one of the ridges beside a valley, I think, but not in the North.)
