{The End of the Middle Ages}[29th October 1990]

[Redbook8:77][19901029:2345]{The End of the Middle Ages}[29th October 1990]

.2345

‘Bosworth Field* had traditionally been taken as the date of the end of the Middle Ages in English history. Recently, however, a strong case has been made for setting the division between mediaeval and modern at 1536 or 1540.’**

Why 1536?

Dissolution of the Monasteries

The 10 Articles of the Church

([King] Henry VIII executed Ann Boleyn and married Jane Seymour)

Why 1540?

([King] Henry VIII divorced Anne of Cleves and married Catherine Howard)

But 1536, of course, is the 512C before ours in 2048ce; the previous 512ce being 1024ce, so the choice is as inspired as 1920 for the ‘modern age’.***
