Once again, * some activities or events are relatively clear[-]cut.


Mercian military subjugation of other kingdoms in order to rule them, not to settle them, is a fairly clear M~ outward action; just as in later centuries, a popular uprising is a fairly clear G~.**


But a Viking invasion leading to migration is M~ tending towards G~ (cf European imperialism in the 2048 year ce cycle); and when Alfred is driven to hide in the marshes, that looks like G~ for him,*** but when he emerges and successfully resists the invading and superior Vikings, that looks like G~ tending towards M~ as he establishes dominance!
