The unspoken inviolability of the assumptions behind nationalism are quite well revealed in the circular I received for ‘Pont’ – which, of course, is Welsh for ‘bridge’. (I have to struggle against counter-acting emotions myself, so my detachment may not be * complete: I had been going to staple the leaflet into this book, but could not bring myself to do so):
‘Pont is a national organisation set up by Dr. Gwynfor Evans** to build bridges between the indigenous Welsh population and incomers, with the following aims:
‘To promote awareness amongst newcomers of the character of their adopted country – and its history, literature, arts, indigenous language and contemporary problems.
‘To increase opportunities for Welsh medium education and for adults to learn Welsh and to learn about Wales.
‘To influence public, commercial and voluntary bodies to fully accept their role in using, furthering and maintaining the Welsh language and culture.’
*{even relatively!}
