Not too pleased to see that in Lowland Scots the “Earl of Hell” is also known as ‘Auld Bobbie’.
But MacDiarmid’s* remark, reported in the same review article,**
‘Scotland cares not, Caesar, clown,
Whoso in her lays him down.’
– is, in my experience of our time, no longer true.
