[A press-cutting from the Independent for 19900823:3 inserted here in the ms is headed ‘Illness during pregnancy may cause schizophrenia in child’ by Nicholas Schoon, Environment Correspondent, reporting on the British Association for the Advancement of Science ‘Science 90’ conference. It suggests that the association of schizophrenia with late winter births (where there is no family history of schizophrenia) may be due to infection of their mothers by winter illnesses in the late stages of pregnancy, causing abnormal brain development.]
