This* is a reasonable description of the cultural history of Christian Europe from 1500 to the present day; if Islam follows this pattern, as it should, the present fundamentalism is not likely to outlast the next century, and is likely to be accompanied during it by the overturning of established authority and bitter factional fighting.
Nevertheless, history never repeats itself exactly, even in broad terms. If I am right in thinking that Islam is even more O[uter] C[ircle] dominated than Christianity, the revolutionary effect at this stage will be that much more marked.
