I have no idea what was the compass orientation,* or where the steam line came from (perhaps from beyond the Avoiding Line?). But the implication was that the Avoiding Line left and rejoined the Platform Lines before and after the station. This (omitting the underground platform) is a common West Country (G[reat] W[estern] R[ailway]) type of layout:
