I note that depression and resentment, even if arising from the past, tend to be directed towards the future, which of course is (to us at least) unreal, in the sense unsettled, open to influence and change, and therefore not (as we see its possibilities) within the Spirit; but these longings, of the Love of the Spirit, the expression of pure Emptiness (so often found in Poetry* and Music), tend to be directed towards the past, which is settled, unchangeable in principle (even though capable of different interpretations in practice), and therefore, as History or as Inner Qualities, within the Spirit. I cannot make a precise definition here: merely noting tendencies.
