Reconstruction
sketch of Mantelpiece at [the Castle] taken from the latest* text
revision/restoration [of [0]. (The problem was to fit the original
text (and vision) to the current Tarot pattern without doing much
change to either.)

[In
the ms there is a rough pencilled sketch of the mantelpiece, the main
figures, and the numbered panels, with the Tarot titles written in
pencil under the Roman numbers.]
This
is, in fact, the original vision of the Fireplace pattern owing
nothing at the time to Tarot Circles (The Grail items appeared,
originally,
later during the first writing of the text). The merit of this
original version is that each of the two columns starts at the top
with the Tarot card at the horizontal Archetype who 'drives' that
Circle: i.e. T.VIII – M~ – Outer; TXV – G~ – Inner. In this
one, too, the TX and TXVII balance each other representing A~ on
Outer and Inner Circles respectively. The pattern, unlike the
Circles, emphasises the continuous nature of the development,
***because the breaks between rows and columns do not match the
changeover points on the Circles.
*[but
not necessarily the last]
**{Cf.V.[]4.} [The Eagle is supposed to be shown as centred over the Mantelpiece.]
