{God's Man [continued (5)]}[16th March 1988]

[Redbook5:79][19880316:2143]{God's Man [continued (5)]}[16th March 1988]

.2143

It distresses me to admit to something that shames me so: but it may be of help, so it must be done. God speaks with the 'still small voice':* so it should not surprise (especially the inexperienced like me) that external distractions, domestic and public, remove the attention from the inner sense.

That is no excuse, however, for my momentary and barbaric reaction of pleasure at the attack on the funeral of three I[rish] R[epublican] A[rmy] terrorists caught 'in the act'** at Gibraltar: explained, I suppose, by frustration not only at the actions but at the words of the IRA. Momentary, before compassion re-asserted itself: but enough to give rise to deep shame that I should feel such things literally in the sight of God, and so abuse my freedom.

Let this warn: that awareness of God is neither omniscience, nor union with God, and God in his mercy allows the Individual Soul still his freedom, to be wrong, merely withdrawing himself (or allowing himself to be veiled) behind the darkening of the Soul. I am at a very primitive stage: still experiencing as all Men could and should.

*[
11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?
