I suppose I read, on average,
between 1/3rd and ½ of each week's T[imes] L[iterary] S[upplement]:
ranging from a couple of articles to almost the whole paper. At one
time, when we were self-employed in London,* having no time for this
I used to 'skim' through each week's TLS, running my eye down each
column too fast to be consciously aware of what was written, in the
hope that something might go in. It was certainly very tiring.**
I suppose that I may have read a
review of 'Small World'*** in a TLS years ago which may have given
away much of the story.****
*[Early
1982 to mid-1985]
**[The
implication intended being, presumably, that it was tiring because
the text was in fact being absorbed and processed in some way.
