A large part of the secret of good government – for the administrator, the politician or the designer of constitutions, in public life or in private enterprise – must be to pick the right people, and to trust your own judgement in so doing; equally, to recognise your own mistakes, having done so, and, when reasonably certain that they are mistakes, to stop them.
