[Redbook2:141B][19790214:1525]{Art
and Reality}[14th February

Basically
there are two ways at least of treating a piece of writing (and
perhaps any other work of creative art). One is to regard it as an
exercise in art, and the other is to treat it as reality. I have
always tended to treat fiction as reality, which is probably why I
found literary criticism and the critical approach incomprehensible
at school. That is not to say that I am unaware of the techniques of
form, because I am, although perhaps not yet enough; but I am aware
of them as a part of the reality existing within the art, and not as
defining the art perceived within our reality.
